Ho Ho Ho people crazy enough to visit my blog out of free will. I have been absent for quite some time now, but fear no more because yours truly is back to bring you news and opinions nobody really asked for. Today’s topic is “Democracy under attack”. I can already tell that I’m going to enjoy criticizing other people from the comfort of my home. But before we begin I would like to share with you my Christmas experience.
So let’s talk about:
This year (last year) for the first time, we had a alive Christmas tree. At first I was against it, for I thought that it would complain all the time about room temperature or where we placed it. However, to my surprise the tree was mute. You see, in Norway at my isle each night between 12 pm and 3 am the trees are able to talk. True story!
You probably wonder what gifts I got. This year I have received chocolate and a new pair of headphones. Yup, that’s it.
I am happy to have these emergency headphones, since one of my abilities is breaking them faster than I can buy them. The chocolates did not lasted for long tho.
My forward thinking got me two more gifts, from myself to myself. I have bought a figure of Knightmare Frame Shinkirō and Suzaku keychain.
Well that’s enough about me, I have revealed enough information about myself in this post. You could probably track me with google maps at this point.
So let’s talk about:
How much we fu**** up this time
Democracy is something most of us are used to. It is the right to decide alongside other people about what will happen in your country. We all have the freedom of choice and freedom of speech, but not everyone can enjoy this luxury. In 2018 there were around 49 nations with dictatorship, it’s not that bad right? At least from where we are that doesn’t really affect us, what can possibly go wrong?
A lot of things really, at any time we could end up as victims of politicians with way too big ambitions, or our own stupidity. All it takes is a group of wealthy people with power or one charismatic man in a hat.
As the first example I am going to pick on Poland, you can’t call me racist or unfair because I indeed am polish (sort of). In 2018? Polish political party that currently had the power, decided that voting is a waste of time. They’ve written some sort of papers that were supposed to make the Supreme Court subordinate to the political party and the president. If this would come to life, the political party could choose their own judges and people to place in the most important positions in the Court. It means that when the next election is done and someone else will get the majority of votes, they could just accuse them of cheating and the court would have to find them guilty. “Redo and repeat” until you get the power back again.
The point is that our governments can do similar things, like slowly changing the law without us noticing it, until we wake up to the police knocking on our doors to arrest us for “hate speech” on Twitter. The Freedom of speech is as important as the freedom of choice.
There is one special snowflake that I can’t call democratic but there isn’t any dictatorship in it neither. It is USA. In USA things are a bit complicated, there is a popular vote and something called Electoral College. Popular vote is a typical voting process where people vote for who is going to be the next president. But this vote doesn’t really matter, it is just a mere suggestion for Fatebinders in the Electoral College. That’s why it’s called a “popular vote” for it just shows who is the most liked president candidate.
The real vote I taken by the EC, each state has an amount of votes, These votes are taken by Electoral College representatives in every state. They follow laws that were made around 200 years ago, that is why some states have less votes than others.
These Fatebinders can pick the winner of the popular vote but they don’t have to, they can pick whoever they like the most ignoring people’s will. Hillary actually won the popular vote, and if it was any other country she would be the president. This is a good example of the illusion of choice.
Let’s not forget about Hitler, our last and shortest example. He used to be nobody, but he managed to take advantage of people’s hatred and made them want to follow him. This could happen again anywhere, all it takes is a little bit of charisma, knowledge how to manipulate with less educated people and a bit of luck.
To sum things up, we should remain vigilant and get involved in our society. Because the day we stop caring about what is happening around us, is the day we lose our freedom and the right to decide about ourselves.
I hope you enjoyed the post, if you noticed any mistakes both in grammar and in the facts I made above, please let me know in the comments. I am looking forward to improve.
